National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has implored on leaders to avoid blaming others for the problems facing the country and instead unite to find solutions.
Wetang’ula said leaders had degenerated to a level where they look at each other with hate and ethnicity.
“Kenyans have given us the rare privilege of leading the country, and for those who much is given, much is expected from them,” he stated.
Speaking in Nalepo Village, Kajiado county during the burial of Elvis Murakana, son of Dagoretti MP Beatrice Elachi, Wetang’ula said leaders should emulate the actions of President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
“President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga realised that the country is bigger than each individual and agreed to work together. Even those shouting from the touchline as the game is going on, come in so that we can build our country,” he said.
He urged those in leadership positions to unite and look for ways to taking the country forward.
“When we have problems, conventional wisdom tells us to not to look for who to blame but look for solutions,” he explained.
Present at the funeral were Cabinet Secretaries Kipchumba Murkomen (Interior), Alice Wahome (Lands) and Opiyo Wandayi (Energy).
Governors Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi) and a host of MPs were also present.
Sakaja and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo called on leaders to heed to the grievances of the youth.
“Our young people are very angry and what we see is bitterness.
The problem is not our young people but us the political class. When you hear cry
of child, you go down to their level and listen. We need to listen and humble
ourselves,” he said.
Sakaja cautioned against responding to the needs to the youth with arrogance.
“Let us not intimidate them because these are people who cannot be threatened,” he said.
Odhiambo highlighted that there are so many Kenyans who are angry and bitter with the country’s current situation.
“We need a moment to heal the nation or else we will be tearing this country apart,” she said.
