Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said he defended government projects for only one year.
Speaking on Monday during an interview, the former DP said that he realised most of the projects had become unpopular with Kenyans.
The former DP said that he faced President William Ruto and told him that he will no longer highlight and defend the projects.
The President had accused Gachagua of failing to explain and defend government projects in public and the media.
Ruto said that was one of the reasons why the former DP was axed from the government.
However, Gachagua said in an interview on KTN that within the one year of defending state projects, he realised it was not working.
"The first year I used to go to the media and meet Kenyans to speak about government projects until I realised the affordable housing is a fraud, I stopped defending it. Even when the President tried to tell me to go to TV and defend the affordable housing project, I told him I will not go," he said
"When I learned the university model was not working and it had become unpopular with students and parents, I refused to go. I refused to defend Adani and SHA."
Speaking during a media engagement in Nyeri, Ruto said his main responsibility was to sell state projects when he served under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"When I was deputy president, I went for TV interviews more than President Uhuru Kenyatta. When serving as deputy president, it's your duty to profile government projects. Did you see Rigathi on any TV station talking about government programmes? No," he said.
He said there is nothing that was passed in government without going through the deputy president, who served as the chairman of development programmes.
In October 2024, the Senate upheld the impeachment of Gachagua, making him the first deputy president to be impeached in Kenya's history.
Senators voted to uphold at least five charges against Gachagua.
