In Summary

  • "It's imperative that the membership gets 2/3 threshold. As of now, it's yet to be achieved as collected by the secretariat. We need a way forward," the returning officer said.
  • "Since the law requires the threshold, I would discourage that we continue unless members feel we can continue to wait and whip up quorum."

Kenya Editors Guild elections and annual general meeting have been postponed.

The elections, which were the main agenda of the AGM, were postponed due to a lack of quorum.

The executive Council is set to meet and issue a new date for elections within 30 days.

Veteran journalists Zubeidah Kananu and Yvonne Okwara vied for the presidential seat, marking a high-stakes contest between two prominent figures in the media.

Kananu, who is the incumbent president and the first woman to hold the position, was seeking re-election.

The race for the presidency was expected to be one of the most closely followed contests in the Guild’s history.

In other positions, Radio Africa Group’s Francis Openda was the sole nominee for Vice President and had been declared elected unopposed.

Similarly, Linda Bach (Print Media), Kenfrey Kiberenge (Online Media) and Millicent Awuor (Television) all secured their places as Council Members, having been the only validly nominated candidates in their respective categories.

The Radio category featured a contest between Toepista Nabusoba and Agnes Mwangangi, while the Academia category will see Nathan Nayere Masambu go head-to-head with Julius Ombui Bosire.

For the Trustee positions, three candidates—Martin Masai, Ruth Nesoba, and Mbugua Ng’ang’a—were validly nominated and have been declared elected.

As stipulated in section 4.3 of the KEG Election Guidelines, the Returning Officer confirmed that all unopposed candidates (numbers 1 to 5) have been duly elected to the Council.
