‎Kenya has graduated 95 senior military officers from an advanced command and staff training programme aimed at preparing them for higher leadership responsibilities in an increasingly complex security environment.

‎The officers completed the Senior Command and Staff Course No. 41–2025/26 at the Joint Command and Staff College (JCSC) in Karen, Nairobi, in a ceremony presided over by Defence Principal Secretary Patrick Mariru on behalf of Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya.

‎The graduating class comprised 71 officers from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and 24 officers from allied countries across Africa, Europe and Asia, underscoring the college's growing role as a regional centre for military professional education.

‎Speaking during the graduation ceremony, Mariru said the course equips officers with the knowledge, leadership skills and strategic understanding required to effectively navigate emerging security challenges and assume greater command responsibilities.

‎"It was great to celebrate the achievements of 95 course participants, comprising 71 officers from the Kenya Defence Forces and an additional 24 from allied nations drawn from Africa, Europe and Asia," he said.

‎Mariru noted that the Joint Command and Staff College remains a critical institution in shaping the next generation of military leaders by strengthening their professional competence and strategic thinking.

‎"JCSC continues to play an important role in developing the professional knowledge, skills and strategic understanding of middle-level military officers, preparing them for greater responsibilities in command and staff appointments," he said.

‎He added that the institution has remained instrumental in preparing officers to respond to evolving security threats and changing operational environments.

‎"Here, officers are moulded to adapt to the ever-evolving and increasingly complex security environment," Mariru said.

‎The Principal Secretary observed that modern security challenges require military leaders who can think beyond conventional battlefield operations and appreciate broader geopolitical, regional and national security dynamics.

‎According to Mariru, the programme exposes participants to a wide range of issues that influence Kenya's national interests and security priorities.

‎"Beyond operational excellence, the programme exposes officers to national, regional and international security dynamics that influence Kenya's national interests," he said.

‎The graduation comes at a time when security agencies globally are grappling with emerging threats including terrorism, cybercrime, transnational organised crime, maritime insecurity and the effects of geopolitical competition.

‎Military training institutions have increasingly expanded their curricula to include strategic studies, diplomacy, crisis management and regional security cooperation to prepare officers for these challenges.

‎The Joint Command and Staff College is one of the region's premier military training institutions and has over the years trained officers from Kenya and numerous partner countries.

‎Its multinational programmes are designed to promote interoperability, strengthen defence cooperation and foster professional networks among military officers from different countries.

‎Mariru congratulated the graduates and challenged them to put into practice the knowledge and leadership skills acquired during the course.

‎"Congratulations to all the graduates. Step out and be successful in applying the knowledge and leadership skills gained in service to your respective nations," he said.

‎The ceremony was attended by Vice Chief of the Defence Forces Lieutenant General John Omenda, Service Commanders, JCSC Commandant Major General Eric Kinuthia and other senior military officers from Kenya and allied nations.

‎The graduation marks another milestone in Kenya's efforts to strengthen professional military education and build a highly skilled defence force capable of responding to both current and future security challenges at home and across the region.
