A multi-agency security team operating in Machakos county has arrested a suspected cannabis dealer.
The targeted operation led to the recovery of a large quantity of drugs allegedly destined for distribution within the area.
According to authorities, the operation was launched after the public provided credible intelligence regarding a man allegedly involved in the sale and distribution of cannabis in Mitaboni Market.
The suspect had reportedly become well known among local residents for supplying the illicit substance within the community.
Acting on the information, officers from various security agencies mounted surveillance on the suspect and monitored his movements as part of an intelligence-led operation.
The surveillance enabled investigators to establish sufficient grounds before moving in to make an arrest.
"The team mounted surveillance after reports that a well-known individual had been supplying cannabis to local residents. They successfully ambushed the suspect at his residence while he was preparing the illicit substance for distribution," the police statement reads.
A thorough search of the premises was subsequently conducted, resulting in the alleged recovery of 1,180 rolls of cannabis sativa and an additional 700 grammes of loose cannabis.
The recovered narcotics were seized as exhibits, while the suspect was immediately taken into custody and escorted to a nearby police station for processing.
Authorities indicated that he remains in lawful custody and is expected to be arraigned in court to face charges related to drug trafficking and possession of narcotic substances.
Security agencies described the operation as a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug peddling in Machakos county, noting that narcotics continue to pose a major threat to communities, particularly among young people vulnerable to substance abuse.
Investigators also emphasised that the successful operation was made possible through cooperation between law enforcement officers and members of the public who shared crucial information.
The DCI noted that community policing remains one of the most effective tools in combating crime and disrupting illegal drug networks.
"The operation highlights the importance of continued collaboration between the National Police Service and the public in combating drug peddling," authorities said.
Police have encouraged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities through the nearest police station, emergency numbers 999 and 911, the toll-free #FichuaKwaDCI hotline 0800 722 203, or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.
The arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by security agencies across the country to crack down on drug trafficking networks and reduce the circulation of illegal narcotics in local communities.
