Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has directed all consultants and Senior House Officers (SHOs) on call within its Surgical Division to remain on standby ahead of the anticipated Gen Z demonstrations scheduled for June 25, 2026.

In an internal memo dated June 24, 2026, the hospital said the move is aimed at ensuring prompt response to any emergencies or casualties that may arise during the planned nationwide protests.

Senior Director of Clinical Services Dr J. Lessan issued the directives and addressed all teams on call within the Surgical Division.

“In anticipation of the Gen-Z demonstrations scheduled for June 25, 2026, all Consultants and Senior House Officers (SHOs) on call are required to remain available to provide timely response to any emergencies/casualties that may arise,” the memo states.

The hospital noted that maintaining adequate staffing levels would be critical in guaranteeing uninterrupted emergency services throughout the period.

According to the memo, the arrangement is intended to strengthen the hospital’s preparedness and ensure patients requiring urgent medical attention receive timely care.

“This is to ensure adequate preparedness and the uninterrupted delivery of emergency clinical services throughout,” Dr Lessan said.

The directive comes a day before planned memorial processions organised by Gen Z activists and other citizens to commemorate those who lost their lives during the anti-government protests witnessed in June 2024.

Several organisations, including human rights groups and legal bodies, have indicated they will be monitoring events during the demonstrations, which are expected to take place in different parts of the country.

KNH, Kenya’s largest national referral hospital, often serves as a key emergency response facility during major national incidents due to its specialised services, trauma care capacity and extensive network of medical personnel.

The hospital emphasised the need for readiness among medical teams expected to handle emergency cases.

Dr Lessan thanked the affected officers for their commitment and cooperation in ensuring emergency medical services remain available during the period.

“Your co-operation and commitment to providing prompt emergency care are highly appreciated,” he said.
