A dramatic high-speed chase along the Eldoret-Nakuru Highway ended with the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of suspected cannabis worth an estimated Sh3.3 million in a major anti-narcotics operation.
The operation took place after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) in Nakuru, working alongside K9 officers, received intelligence about a vehicle suspected of transporting illegal drugs.
Acting on the information, the officers mounted an operation and laid a trap along the busy highway in a bid to intercept the vehicle.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the driver ignored police orders to stop and instead accelerated, triggering a high-speed pursuit.
During the chase, the vehicle's front tyre was deflated, but the driver continued speeding, making a dangerous U-turn at the KFA Roundabout before heading towards the Eveready area on the damaged tyre.
Despite the desperate attempt to evade arrest, the suspects eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.
Detectives swiftly pursued them and arrested the two men before they could escape.
A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of five sacks suspected to be containing 110 kilogrammes of Cannabis Sativa, with an estimated street value of Sh3.3 million.
The narcotics were seized and secured as exhibits.
The suspects are currently in police custody undergoing processing and are expected to be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.
The seizure highlights the ongoing efforts by Kenyan security agencies to combat drug trafficking and disrupt criminal networks transporting narcotics across the country.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intelligence-led operations aimed at protecting communities from the harmful effects of illegal drugs.
The DCI has also appealed to the public to continue sharing information that could assist in the fight against drug trafficking through its anonymous reporting channels.
