Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) legislator Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru was on Tuesday officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ol Kalou, formally taking office following his victory in the recent by-election.
Kamau took the oath of office before National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula during the afternoon sitting of the House, pledging to faithfully serve the people of Ol Kalou and uphold the Constitution.
As he was marching into the parliament, echoes and celebration erupted from the lawmakers. It forced Wetang'ula to call for silence in the House, reminding members that the swearing-in ceremony was a solemn parliamentary process.
"You know that when you are swearing in your colleague, it's done in absolute silence. You can celebrate thereafter, and the celebration will be in the garden out there, not on the floor of the House," the Speaker said.
After confirming that Kamau wished to swear using the Bible, Wetang'ula invited the member-elect to take the oath.
"I, Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru, having been elected a Member of the National Assembly, do swear in the name of the Almighty God that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the people and the Republic of Kenya, that I will obey, respect, uphold, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya, and that I will faithfully and conscientiously discharge the duties of a Member of Parliament. So help me God," Kamau said.
He later signed the oath register, officially assuming office as the Ol Kalou legislator.
Shortly after the ceremony, Kamau shared the milestone on his official X account.
"And finally, I have taken the Oath of Office to serve the patriotic people of Ol Kalou Constituency. So help me God," he posted.
Earlier in the day, the MP-elect travelled from Ol Kalou to Parliament aboard a public service matatu, sharing photos and videos of the journey on social media.
Quoting Psalms 118:24, Kamau thanked God and the people of Ol Kalou for electing him to represent them in the National Assembly.
Kamau enters Parliament after securing a resounding victory in the Ol Kalou by-election on a DCP ticket.
Official results announced by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission showed he garnered more than 35,440 votes against about 5,450 votes for UDA candidate Samuel Muchina Nyagah.
Nine candidates contested the by-election. The other candidates were Abdifatah Hussein Abdallah (FPK), Timothy Kariuki (PPM), Wilson Mwaniki (Jubilee), Edwin Kareri (PNU), Edward Mathenge (KKM), Rachel Wangui (PDP) and Stephen Waithaka (NLP).
The victory handed DCP its first parliamentary seat since the party's formation.
The race attracted intense campaigns from both the Kenya Kwanza coalition and opposition leaders, who turned Ol Kalou into a key political battleground.
UDA leaders campaigned on government development projects, with Cabinet Secretaries, Principal Secretaries, governors and MPs traversing the constituency in support of Muchina.
The opposition, led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua alongside Nyandarua Senator John Methu, Nyandarua Woman Representative Wanjiku Muhia and other leaders, centred its campaign on the high cost of living, economic challenges and calls for political change.
Kamau now joins the National Assembly as the first MP elected on a DCP ticket, giving the party representation in Parliament following its victory in the by-election.
