Countries where MPESA has been expanded to

M-PESA is celebrating 18 years. It was launched in Kenya on March 6, 2007.

It started as a simple mobile money transfer service and has since evolved into a global benchmark for financial inclusion, empowering millions across Africa and beyond.

After its launch in Kenya in March 2007, it was expanded to Tanzania (April 2008), the Democratic Republic of Congo (November 2012), Mozambique (May 2013), Egypt (June 2013), Lesotho (July 2013), and Ghana (December 2015).

At the M-PESA Africa office in Nairobi, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit heads the team that watches over the platform in the markets beyond Kenya.

M-PESA Africa is a joint venture between Safaricom and Vodacom Group that was established in 2020.
