Observed every year on June 20, World Refugee Day is designated by the United Nations to honour refugees worldwide and recognise the strength and courage of people forced to flee their homes due to conflict or persecution.

The day highlights the rights, needs and aspirations of refugees, while mobilising political will and resources to help them thrive.

It also draws global attention to displacement crises and encourages activities and events that bring refugees and host communities together in solidarity.

First observed globally in 2001, the commemoration is led by the UN refugee agency, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The 2026 theme, “Until Everyone is Safe,” emphasises protection and inclusion.
