Five people from Korogocho slums were on Friday charged before a Nairobi court with taking part in unlawful assembly.

Jack Odhiambo, John Aura, Asalmus Ochieng, Evans Oburu and Beatrice Adala were accused of taking part in unlawful demonstrations and disruption of public peace.

They allegedly committed the offence on July 19, 2023, at or around Korogocho police station in Starehe Sub-county within Nairobi county.

Appearing before Magistrate Gilber Shikwe, they were charged with participating in unlawful demonstrations and disrupting public peace.

According to the charge sheet, the accused persons jointly with others not before court caused obstruction to other road users and inflicted fear on the public.

The five denied the charges before Milimani senior principal magistrate Shikwe and pleaded for lenient bond terms. 

They told court that they had gone to report insecurity in the area when the police turned against them.

Their lawyer James Waweru told the court that the five accused persons have families to take care of.

The court released each on a bond of Sh50,000 with an alternative cash bail of Sh 30,000.

The case will be mentioned on August 15.
