Only two new political parties have been registered in Kenya, since the August 2022 general elections, this is according to data from the Registrar of Political Parties.

In an update on the status of political parties in the country as of February 25, only The We Alliance Party (TWAP) and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) have been registered since the 2022 polls.

These two parties were awarded registration certificates on February 3, 2025.

This brings the total number of fully registered parties in the country to 92, including one coalition party.

“There is no political party here in which has entered into a merger… there is no political party herein which has been dissolved,” Registrar Anne Nderitu said, adding that the 92 are all registered under the Political Parties Act Cap 7D, including those that transitioned from  following compliance with the PPA enacted in 2011.

Provisionally registered parties are not included in the above list.

This comes even as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua continues to shop for a political vehicle that he will use as the countries moves towards the 2027 general elections.

He has kept many guess what his new party will be.

Gachagua who was expected to launch the party in February moved the launch date to May 2025.

He said he would not announce the party as he feared sabotage.

"I will announce the party in May 2025," Gachagua stated.

The former DP alleged a plan to launch many other parties to divide the Mt Kenya vote.

Gachagua, however, said that he will do all that is within his power to identify such parties and warn the people against following them.

“For strategic reasons, I will not announce the party today. I will announce in May, we will launch the party in a colourful ceremony."

"We know there is a plan to launch more political parties to confuse the region. We are aware that there are plans for some of these parties to have presidential candidates to divide the region."

On Monday, Gachagua said that before forming the political party he will benchmark with the Orange Democratic Movement to know how they have kept the party strong.
