A seven-year-old girl drowned in a river she was swimming with other children in Ainabkoi, Uasin Gishu County.
The incident happened Saturday in river Ellegerini, Bombo, police said.
The PP2 pupil slipped and fell into the river while attempting to grab her slippers that had been swept away by the water.
Other children reported the same to the nearest neighbours who mounted a search and found the body 500 meters from the scene of the incident held by a tree branch.
It was retrieved and found to have sustained forehead bruises.
Police said they are investigating the incident.
Police say most rivers and streams are swollen due to ongoing rains being experienced and want general caution from all concerned.
So far up to 70 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in the country. Most of the victims drowned, police said.
The meteorological department has warned more rains will be experienced in the coming days and declared an El Nino.
