KMTC announces scholarships in Community Nursing for Turkana residents, refugees

The Kenya Medical Training College(KMTC) has announced sponsored training opportunities in Turkana county for a certificate in Community Health Nursing for the 2023-24 academic year.

The certificate course will commence in March 2024 for the academic year 2023-24.

“The training Scholarship will target the local community in Turkana county and the Refugee Community in Kakuma and Kalobeyei Refugee camps” the statement reads.

The training will be offered at KMTC Lodwar Campus and will take two years.

According to a statement on their X account, KMTC said that the UNHCR will provide for the full tuition to the successful candidates who will meet their criteria.

The student is required to have a KCSE mean grade of C- or equivalent qualifications of C- in English or Kiswahili, a C- in Biology and a D + in Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.

“Must be from Turkana County or the Kakuma/Kalobeyei Refugee Camps,” the statement reads.

“Have a letter of introduction from the area chief (for local applications) or a Manager /UNHCR official in the Kakuma /Kalobeyei refugee camps”

The health institution stated that the applicant must also submit a brief essay of not more than 200 words stating why they wish to take under the scholarship.

The application should be made to the Chief Executive Officer through the KMTC application portal on or before March 15th.

The scholarships are through a collaboration with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees(UNHCR) and the county government of Turkana.

This comes a month after the government announced scholarship opportunities for students from low backgrounds who wish to pursue a certificate course in Community Health Nursing.

The scholarships are being offered by the Kenya Medical Training College in collaboration with Beyond Zero.

KMTC in a notice said the scholarship opportunities will commence in March 2024 for the academic year 2023-24.

KMTC CEO Kelly Oluoch said qualified candidates from selected Arid and Semi-Arid counties, underserved minorities and other vulnerable and marginalized groups will be given top priority.

The two-year- scholarships will be offered at KMTC Kapenguria, Kabarnet, Bomet, Loitoktok, Garissa, Kilifi, Kitui and Msambweni campuses.

To qualify for the scholarships, the candidates must also be willing to serve in their communities upon graduation.
