The South Africa Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) is set to declare the results of the concluded elections at the National Results Operations Centre at Gallagher Estate, Midrand today.

IEC on Saturday evening said it would announce the full results today (Sunday) at 18:00 local time.

This reflects the significance of the election and the broader implications for South Africa's democracy.

South Africans cast their votes on May 29, in the 17 democratic National and Provincial elections since the country's transition to full democracy.

The voting process began with special voting days on May 27 and 28, allowing early ballots to be cast.

This election cycle marked the first implementation of the Electoral Amendment Act, which became law in June 2023.

The Act expanded the eligibility for contesting the National and Provincial Elections to include independent candidates, diversifying the political landscape and giving voters more choices.

The commission said all objections raised by a number of political parties would be reviewed, and recounts would be ordered if needed.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will also participate in the final results announcement ceremony for South Africa's 2024 National and Provincial Elections on Sunday.

A statement issued by his office said Ramaphosa will address the nation after the event.

“President Ramaphosa will deliver an address as part of the results ceremony,” it reads.

BBC reported that the ANC leadership, including President Ramaphosa, was currently discussing the way forward and preparing for complex coalition talks.

Its options are a coalition with the DA, which is in second place at 22%, or the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party led by former President Jacob Zuma, at 15%, it said.

The radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is on 9%, so a coalition of those two parties would fall just short of the required 50%.

The new parliament must be sworn in within two weeks of the final results and the new president would normally be chosen then.

Both the EFF and MK advocate seizing white-owned land and nationalising the country's mines-policies which would alarm foreign investors.
