Azimio has warned that the recent remarks by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on National Intelligence Security Boss Noordin Haji are a threat to National security.

Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi noted what DP Gachagua said could expose the country to security issues.

Wandayi said NIS is one of the three security organs under the Constitution, the others are the Kenya Defence Forces and National Police Service and if a high-ranking leader like the DP comes out and informs the nation he has lost confidence in such a vital organ, then what are Kenyans suppose to do.

He noted that the DP seats in the National Security Council, the highest security decision-making organ under the Constitution, and in functioning democratic systems, one would have expected that he would raise the concerns he has about the management of NIS in the Security Council.

"Or even more importantly, being the Principal Assistant to the President under the Constitution he is expected to be sharing such information and concerns with his boss as the president regularly behind the scenes," Wandayi said.

Wandayi noted that coming out to broadcast to the whole world the lack of capabilities of the country's national intelligence service is pushing the recklessness too far.

He added that it was not proper in the normal sense for a person of the calibre of the DP to come out to disparage the person of a senior government officer.

The Ugunja MP further stated that they don't know what is causing all the disparage in the government but they should spare the country the shame of being seen as an administration that does not seem to function well.

"Without taking sides, the outburst by DP Gachagua was in extremely bad taste and I think President Ruto Must put his house in order to spare us this shame. You can have your squabbles inside there, but please don't jeopardise national security," Wandayi said.

The Minority Leader added that whereas the DP is talking about the NIS, what comes out for most Kenyans is that there is a dysfunction in the government.

He noted that the DP addressing the media 30 or 40 minutes after his boss has done the same paints a picture of two governments in one.

"But that is their problem, not ours like we always say we won't bother much about what is happening internally within UDA and Kenya Kwanza. But some of those actions affect the nations," he said.

"We don't care who is right or wrong in the UDA/ Kenya Kwanza power struggle, that is their business, but when now their business encroaches on the arena of national security then it affects all of us".

Wandayi noted that as responsible leaders in the opposition, they must voice these concerns.
