Tiaty Member of Parliament William Kamket has demanded an apology from Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his remarks on the alleged conduct of the National Assembly.
While addressing the House on Tuesday, Kamket said that Gachagua allegedly referred to the conduct of the House in uncomfortable terms.
He said the deputy president should dignify his support of Parliament by apologising.
“Yesterday, the DP on national television referred to this House in uncomfortable terms. While it is right to say whatever he wants to say, as a former member himself, it would be so that the Deputy President, as a precursor to his speech, apologises to this House. This is an honourable House of Kenyans, and these are elected MPs. This House is neither a theatre nor has absurdity,” he said.
Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula said the House found the content of the Gachagua's description of the House was not in good words. Wetang’ula said that the DP should have refrained from commenting on matters before the House.
“It is spilt milk, water under the bridge. You said what you said. But it is only fair that being an immediate former member of this House, you should exercise your conscience to hold as to whether this is a theatre of the absurd or the Honourable National Assembly of the Republic of Kenya,” he said.
Gachagua defended himself, saying he has tremendous respect for the House. The DP said that he would not disrespect the House because he was a member for five years.
“I appear here in a very nostalgic moment that I’m back in the House where I stayed for five years even though I have come under different circumstances,” he said.
The DP is currently before the House to respond to allegations in his impeachment motion. Gachagua was allocated two hours to defend himself against the allegations.
