Detectives have destroyed narcotics worth more than Sh176. 5 million at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory following the completion of a court process presided over by senior principal magistrate Njeri Thuku.
Deputy Director of the DCI, John Onyango, who represented DCI Director Mohamed Amin said the destruction symbolises the directorate’s unwavering determination to rid society of the drug trafficking and abuse menace.
"Every gram of these drugs destroyed represents lives saved," Onyango said.
The drugs destroyed include cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, amphetamine, atilafetamine, cannabis (bhang), and flunitrazepam.
The cache was recovered by anti-narcotics detectives on separate occasions during their relentless efforts in the fight against drugs.
Principal Magistrate Njeri Thuku acknowledged the good work done by the DCI in safeguarding the country and lauded the collective work of all the stakeholders involved in the entire process.
She said that the aim of such an action was to ensure that communities are safe and society is protected.
The destruction of the drug haul was witnessed by Allan Mulama from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, Director Anti Narcotics Unit, Samuel Laboso, Director Liason and Corporate Communications, John Marete, and officers from the Government Chemist, among other officials from notable state agencies.
A report by the Institute for Security Studies published on August 15 said that a backlog of past, pending, and new drug trafficking court cases was helping keep drug offenders on the streets.
