Central Organization of Trade Unions secretary general Francis Atwoli has welcomed the move to increase the minimum wage across various sectors to 6 per cent.

Atwoli said the increase is a significant step toward improving the livelihood of workers.

He revealed that it comes after a formal request made by COTU (K) during the Labour Day celebrations earlier this year.

“COTU (K) is pleased to acknowledge the recent announcement, raising the minimum wage by six per cent,” he said.

Atwoli called upon the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection to ensure compliance with the increase. He vowed that as COTU (K), they will continue to ensure that the rights and welfare of all unionised workers are constantly enhanced.

At the same time, he noted that the adjustment reflects the government's continued commitment to addressing the challenges faced by workers, especially during the economically challenging times marked by inflation and the rising cost of living.

He vowed that as COTU (K), they will continue to ensure that the rights and welfare of all unionised workers are constantly enhanced.

In light of this wage increase, COTU (K) advised all affiliated unions and their members to begin re-negotiating their respective Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).

This, he said, is to ensure that workers are cushioned from the erosion of purchasing power.

“We advise our affiliates to ensure that they negotiate for a two-year cycle CBA to have flexibility in the negotiations in accordance to changing economic dynamics,” Atwoli said.

He stated that the process will ensure that the six per cent increase is duly incorporated, safeguarding the rights and interests of Kenyan workers across various industries.

“As COTU (K), we remain committed and dedicated to advocating for workers' rights and we shall continue to engage with the government and employers to promote fair and just working conditions,” he stated.

His remarks come shortly after Labour CS Alfred Mutua announced the increase.

“We have updated the Regulation of Wages for both the General and Agricultural sectors, which will directly benefit workers across the nation,” Mutua added.
