Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Wednesday hosted the First Mayor of Gersthofen, Michael Worle, to explore partnership opportunities between Kenya and the German city in Kenya’s rapidly developing carbon markets.

The discussions focused on how Gersthofen could support Kenya’s carbon market growth as the country advances its climate finance initiatives.

The meeting comes as Kenya prepares to implement regulatory frameworks for carbon markets under the amended Climate Change Act passed last year.

According to CS Duale, these regulations aim to align carbon market activities with Kenya’s development goals, as outlined in the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA Plan), the 4th Medium Term Plan (MTP IV), and the Kenya Vision 2030 blueprint.

“Our focus is to ensure that the carbon market benefits Kenya’s development priorities and supports sustainable growth,” Duale said.

CS Duale further highlighted Kenya’s commitment to addressing the climate crisis by leveraging private sector engagement in carbon trading, particularly from international players.

Mayor Worle was accompanied by Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandie.

Last year, Mayor Worle paid a courtesy visit to Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, where they held talks on a potential partnership between Gersthofen and the county.

Governor Nyong’o welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the benefits of integrating German models to build Kisumu into an economically resilient county.

“This partnership is timely as we work toward Sustainable Development Goals and effective climate action strategies,” said Governor Nyong’o.

Mayor Worle echoed the need for local governments to collaborate, particularly in climate partnerships, sustainable energy, water supply, technical training, and smart city solutions.

He emphasized a focus on sustainable, impactful projects, such as leveraging German environmental technology for Kenyan needs, and committed to a long-term, actionable partnership through a twinning Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry views international partnerships as critical to achieving Kenya’s climate goals and financing its environmental projects.

Through such collaborations, Kenya aims to not only mitigate climate change but also stimulate economic growth, benefiting local communities and ensuring a sustainable future for the nation.
