Burundian man collapses at KNCHR offices

Police said the victim was attended to by paramedics and later rushed to Mbagathi District Hospital for treatment while in fair condition.

Police found poison in the man's bag


A Burundi national on Sunday collapsed at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) offices situated at Kasuku road off Lenana road.

Police said they received a report that someone had collapsed while inside their offices.

Upon responding, they found a man lying unconscious on the floor. He was later identified as Leonard Habimana, 18.

It was established that the victim went to the facility and identified himself as a Burundian refugee who is registered at UNHCR.

He suddenly collapsed and became unconscious and upon a search, a sachet of rat poison which had been torn open containing a little substance and a water bottle with a blackish liquid substance resembling a mixture of the poison and water were found in his bag.

Police said the victim was attended to by paramedics and later rushed to Mbagathi District Hospital for treatment while in fair condition.

Elsewhere in Ahenyo village in Kisumu, police said one Maurice Omondi Onyango aged 39 years committed suicide on Saturday.

Police said the man hung himself with a sisal rope tied around his neck on a tree.

No suicide note was found.

The body was moved to the JOOTRH mortuary for postmortem examination.

In Kieni East, Nyeri County, Paul Maina Gakuru aged 53 years committed suicide by hanging himself with a sisal rope.

Police officers said that the deceased could have ingested herbicides (Rocket 44EC and Bestox) before hanging himself.

The body was later moved to Mary Immaculate Hospital Mortuary in Mweiga, pending an autopsy

The World Health Organisation estimates that 703,000 people die by suicide each year, making it the fourth leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29.

WHO says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
