Police have arrested four more students of Shiners Boys High School in Nakuru as investigations into the fatal stabbing of a KCSE candidate at the school continue.
The boys were in session writing their oral tests, which started on Monday, October 28.
Vincent Ngugi was allegedly stabbed in the lower abdomen Saturday evening after a fight broke out in one of the cubicles shortly after they had taken their supper.
Nakuru County Commissioner Loyford Kibaara said the arrest brings to eight the total number of candidates in police custody as detectives try to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Out of the eight, five of them are doing their exams in Mbaruk police post; the other three arrested initially are in Gilgil police station,” he said.
Police are trying to establish the credibility of claims that the key suspect used a broken piece of glass to stab the deceased.
The murder weapon is yet to be found, although initial reports had indicated that the stab wound was inflicted by a knife.
An autopsy scheduled for this week is expected to establish the type of murder weapon used.
Five of the boys involved in the fight had reportedly been suspended from school, giving rise to the possibility that differences could have arisen as they tried to settle scores.
Kibaara said the Ministry of Education would need to conduct an inspection at the school upon completion of the national exams.
Meanwhile, Basic Education PS Belio Kipsang called on teachers and school heads across the country to improve surveillance at their respective institutions to avert such incidents.
“We urge all of us, our teachers, to ensure they improve on surveillance; they work very closely with the students so that they can be able to gather intelligence information because these things don’t just happen,” he said when he visited the school.
A Naivasha court on Monday granted the police 14 more days to continue holding the suspects in custody as they continue with further investigations.
The matter has been slated for mention on November 25 for further directions.
