The county assembly of Homa Bay County has announced a vacancy in the office of the Speaker.

The Speaker's seat was declared vacant following the provisions of Section 21(5)(d) of the Elections Act, 2011, Section 11(1)(d) of the County Governments Act, 2012, and Standing Order No. 4 of the Assembly's Standing Orders.

The former speaker Julius Gaya resigned from office on November 12, 2024, hours before his planned impeachment.

The Homa Bay County Assembly will convene on Thursday, November 21 to elect a new Speaker in line with legal and procedural requirements for filling such vacancies.

Individuals interested in vying for the position of Speaker are invited to obtain nomination papers from the office of the clerk at the County Assembly Buildings in Homa Bay Town.

Nomination papers will be available for collection from Thursday, November 14, 2024, to Monday, November 18, 2024, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

To be considered eligible, candidates are required to meet the requirements outlined in Article 193 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, and Sections 21, 25, and 43 of the Elections Act, 2011.

Interested candidates have also been asked to submit their completed nomination papers, accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae, to the Clerk's office no later than 9:30 AM on Tuesday,  November 19, 2024, at least 48 hours before the assembly convenes to elect the new speaker.

In addition, in the nomination submission, the candidates have been asked they include the names and signatures of at least two members of the County Assembly who support the candidate's bid, along with a declaration from the members confirming the candidate's qualifications and willingness to serve as Speaker.
