Deputy President Kithure Kindiki on Thursday witnessed the signing of an agreement granting Nairobi the rights to host the Eastern Africa Regional Office of the United Cities and Local Government of Africa (UCLG-Africa).

The ceremony was held at his Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi.

The signing was done between Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi (Secretary General of UCLG-Africa) and Terry Mbaika (Principal Secretary, State Department for Devolution), among other senior officials.

Speaking after the signing, Kindiki said planned urban settlement will propel Kenya and the African continent towards achieving it key goal of empowering its people.

“The crown jewel of Kenya’s transformative 2010 constitution is devolution, a most consequential paradigm that has dispersed public power to subnational level for better, faster and more efficient delivery of services to the people.

“Successful roll out of devolved government and sustainable well planned urban settlements will turbo-charge Kenya’s and indeed Africa’s priority agenda of empowerment of the citizens,” The Deputy President said.
