Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has asked Matatus, buses and passenger service vehicles to reduce fare prices to reflect lower fuel prices.
In a tweet on his X account, the Nandi Senator said failure to do that, the police should crack down on the non-compliant PSVs in the country.
“With the reduction of fuel prices in the country the Matatu, buses & passenger service vehicles (PSV) should equally REDUCE their fares prices in equal measure to reflect lower fuel prices, Failure to which the police should crack down on the non-compliant PSVs in the country,” he tweeted.
His sentiments come hours after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority announced new fuel prices.
The pump prices for super petrol dropped by Sh4.37 with diesel and kerosene dropping by Sh3, respectively for the December-January cycle.
The maximum allowed petroleum pump prices for Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene decreased by Sh4.37, Sh3 and Sh3 respectively.
According to EPRA, In Nairobi, Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene will now retail at Sh176.29, Sh165.06 and 148.39 effective midnight for the next 30 days.
Meanwhile, the low fuel prices in the country mean low inflation which is currently at a 17-year low despite slightly edging up to 2.8 per cent (year-on-year) in November, from 2.7 per cent a month earlier.
It remains well within the government's preferred band of 2.5 per cent -7.5 per cent in the medium term.
Fuel prices have a big effect on inflation the products are drivers of the economy where diesel is key in agriculture and transport while kerosene is used in many households for cooking and lighting.
Earlier, Cherargei had praised President William Ruto’s
strategies aimed at creating a prosperous nation for all, saying the fuel price
cut is a testament to the government's commitment to improving the economic
well-being of citizens.
"The strategies of President Ruto in creating a prosperous nation for all is starting to bear fruits," he said.
