Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has announced that he will lead protests if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission will not be formed by March 2025.

The Wiper leader expressed concerns over the continued delay to reconstitute IEBC.

In a statement on X, Kalonzo said that he is ready to lead protests from March next year.

“Before March next year, if IEBC has not yet been formed, I will lead Maandamano,” he said.

Former IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye, left the office in January this year, after the expiry of their term.

Former vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya resigned from office following their stand on the 2022 presidential election results.

Irene Masit was removed from office after a tribunal recommended her removal.

As a result of the prolonged vacancies, three constituencies and several wards have remained without representatives for two years now.

The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly called on leaders across the political to support the reconstitution of the IEBC.

Vice-chair Mwengi Mutuse said leaders should not erect barriers and then blame the government for any delays in naming a new team.

“We want to tell those playing the games to declare their intentions. From where we stand as a committee, we wanted IEBC to be in place last year,” he stated.

On December 3, Kalonzo said it is regrettable that the country has no functioning electoral system three years before the general election.

Speaking during a regional conference on the use of AI, digital and social media in elections in Kenya, the opposition leader urged those concerned to put aside their selfish interests for the good of the country.

“I urge those standing in the way of reconstituting IEBC to see the bigger picture. They should set aside their narrow selfish interests in preference to the greater good of the nation,” he said.

“Please allow us to reconstitute IEBC as soon as possible,” he added.
