Top police commanders visited Chemase area, Nandi County after a raid on the local police post that saw it vandalized and a murder suspect in custody lynched.

Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police Eliud Lagat and his Administration Police Service counterpart Gilbert Masengeli spent Sunday, January 5, at Chemase police post talking to police and locals.

They directed that a full investigation be logically concluded on the Chemase incident.

The DIGs further reiterated Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja's call on making police stations centres of excellence in police operations and service delivery.

Locals had on January 2 raided the police post and vandalized it, burnt down property after they had grabbed a murder suspect from the cells and lynched him.

This came as local police at Chepswerta Market recovered from a tractor, the National and Kenya Police Service flags that were stolen when irate members of the public invaded the Chemase Police Post on January 2, 2025 and burnt to death, a murder suspect.

The suspect was in police custody pending arraignment for murder.

The gang also burnt a police Ford Ranger motor vehicle from Potopoto Police Station.

The police said they had been tipped off, and the flags were hidden under the mudguard of the tractor.

They checked and recovered them, police said.

Lagat and Masengeli held a security consultative meeting with police officers from all the sub-counties within Nandi.

They urged the commanders to work with the community and local leaders to foster peace, trust and tranquillity.

The National Police Service condemned the incident, cautioning members of the public against taking the law into their own hands.

“Following the attack at the Chemase Police Post, we are appealing to the members of the public to refrain from taking the law in their hands and let the law take its cause once a suspect has been arrested,” said NPS spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango.

“The destruction of police property as was witnessed at Chemase Police Post where a police vehicle was burnt down by irate members of the public only hampers police efficiency in offering the much-needed services to members of the public. In the spirit of community policing, we urge the members of the public to cooperate with police to enhance security within our areas.”
