Police officers from Kiasuni subcounty in Mombasa have arrested four suspected gang members who are said to have been terrorising residents.

The police also recovered weapons from the said gang.

The arrest followed reports of an attack on two individuals heading to the Kongowea market.

Police officers on foot patrol traced the suspects to Kadongo area.

Upon encountering the officers, the suspects were ordered to surrender by the police pursuing them.

Instead, the gang members reportedly resisted, violently launching an assault on the police officers.

In response to the suspects’ resistance, the officers returned fire, injuring a suspect on his left foot.

The suspects were subsequently arrested and taken to Mjambere Police Station, while the injured individual was escorted to Coast Teaching and Referral Hospital for medical care.

The remaining three suspects are currently undergoing processing pending arraignment.

Meanwhile, the confiscated pangas and a knife have been secured as exhibits by the police.

In another incident in Mombasa, three members of a machete-wielding gang accused of terrorising residents within the county’s Kiembeni and Kadzandani areas have been arrested.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Mohamed Amin said in a statement on January 9, that the trio, all suspected to be members of an infamous gang was rounded up during a security sting conducted by detectives from the DCI headquarters in  Nairobi.

He said the gang is known to operate with impunity while armed with crude weapons, including daggers and machetes.

“They stage robberies at business premises and muggings on lone pedestrians,” Amin said.

“In a bid to phase out the gang and put its members where they belong, Coast region detectives joined the headquarters squad in the day-long intelligence-led operation, culminating in the arrest.”

The suspects, all male, are aged 24, 26 and 34 years old respectively.

Amin said two of the suspects were apprehended at Mwatamba 2 stage in Kiembeni, while the oldest of them was arrested within Kadzandani while in possession of a knife and two face masks.

Also found on them were four mobile phones, a woollen hood, a small college bag, a SIM card holder and a wallet.
