Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said that the government will establish and gazette two new land registries in Taita Taveta county.

Speaking in Njukini on Tuesday, Kindiki said this will help in the ongoing title deed issuance exercise in the country.

“The government is going to gazette immediately two new land registries in Taita Taveta. The first registry will be here in Taveta and another will be in Voi,” he said.

The Deputy President was spearheading a title deed issuance drive in Njukini, in Taita Taveta, where he issued at least 1,301 title deeds.

They are part of 3,545 titles ready for issuance that cover six settlement schemes.

Kindiki said the registries will also save the residents time from travelling long distances to access services in land offices as is currently the case.

He said the state will continue with the title deed issuing exercise in the coming days.

The DP added that the government will also work in improving other areas in the county including building decent markets for farmers and improving the state of roads for ease of movement and trade.

This comes even as many residents in the county continue to live as squatters.

Most of the land in the county is occupied by the Tsavo National Park, ranches and sisal estates.

There are also huge lands held as freehold with residents left with what remains.

In 2022, the government said it planned to issue at least 12,500 title deeds in the county, as part of its efforts to end landlessness in the country.

Some 2,500 title deeds were issued to Voi residents, with another 7,000 and 3,000 titles announced for Taveta and Mwatate residents, respectively.
