The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the Friday incident along Narok-Nairobi Highway.

In a statement on Saturday, IPOA condemned the confrontation that ensued between the public and officers, leading to injuries and deaths.

“IPOA has since deployed its rapid response team to carry out investigations and will make appropriate recommendations for any police officers who will be found culpable for any violations of the law,” IPOA chairperson Ahmed Hassan said.

The authority appealed to the local leadership of the area and other government institutions to find a lasting solution to the frequent incidents of motor vehicle and livestock accidents.

Further, the authority calls upon the public to remain calm as investigations into the matter are in progress.

“Any member of the public with any information about the incident is encouraged to visit IPOA offices personally or use its tollfree number 1559,” Hassan added.

IPOA also extended its condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and wished a quick recovery to the injured.

On Friday, the residents of Duka Moja Trading Centre in Narok County blocked the highway demanding compensation for the loss of sheep which were killed by a speeding car.

Some shepherds were crossing the road with the sheep when the speeding vehicle hit and killed 25 sheep, then fled the scene.

The residents then barricaded the highway in response to the road accident as they demanded Sh3 million compensation for the loss.

Police were called to the area and in the efforts to restore order, a fight ensued between the police and demonstrators resulting to the use of firearms and teargas.

In the violent confrontation, dozens of people including nine police officers were injured, while at least two people were shot and killed.

Outgoing National Police Service spokesperson Dr Resila Onyango said two of the seriously injured officers including one whose hand was chopped off by a Maasai sword, were airlifted to Nairobi for further treatment.

She added that Nairegia Enkare Police Station, Ntulele Police Station, and Land Cruizers were also damaged.

A firearm that was stolen from one of the injured officers was recovered without a magazine.
