A 32-year-old man committed suicide at his father-in-law’s home compound in Magare village in Homa Bay Town constituency following differences with his wife.
Erick Omondi body’s was discovered by his sister-in-law on Saturday after travelling from Nairobi.
His father-in-law Peter Aluoch said the man did not inform his family that he would visit them.
“The man has lived with my daughter for eight years but has never visited our home when they were together. We only talked on phone,” Aluoch said.
Residents said Omondi who comes from North Sakwa in Bondo, Siaya county was not sure where he was going and kept asking for directions to the home where he committed suicide.
After arrival, the family decided to make breakfast.
But before the family could eat together, Omondi asked to be excused claiming he was going to check on a group of people who had accompanied him.
No one knew his intentions.
A few minutes later, his sister-in-law spotted the body hanging from a tree just next to the family compound.
Police were then called to collect the body which was taken to Homa Bay Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
Investigators established that the man had three pieces of ropes with him.
The family said the man could have decided to hang himself because of marital issues.
Aluoch said his daughter complained that they had domestic squabbles with the man.
“My daughter brought her two children to live with me complaining that her husband had threatened to kill them. They fought on New Year,” he said.
Residents Dan Odhiambo and Esther Ouma said the death is a sign of bad omen.
He said the community is worried that the village may witness natural calamity like floods or drought.
