President William Ruto is this Monday releasing the first-ever
bonus payment to sugar cane farmers in Mumias, Kakamega County.
The President had on January 1 said the bonus for cane farmers
would be ready by the end of this month.
"As I promised, we will install new management at Mumias Sugar Company. We will ensure that there is a programme that gives sugarcane farmers timely payments, timely payments to workers, and a bonus for farmers,’’ he said on January 1.
"I will be here by the end of January 2025 to oversee the payment of the first bonus to sugar farmers since the company started. I committed to paying this bonus to the hard-working farmers through the leasing programme.”
President Ruto spoke during the Kakamega Governor’s Cup 2024 tournament at the Mumias Sports Complex, Kakamega County.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa thanked President Ruto for fulfilling his promise.
“You were here in January and promised to come back before the end of January. I thank you for responding to come and tour the region for development,’’ he said.
“It is a historic day that here today you will declare a bonus. There are those saying that we shall pay fraudsters, these are genuine cane farmers.”
The governor urged President Ruto to ensure that cane farmers in Western Kenya get better returns next year by availing fertilizer and planting materials.
“That will ensure that our farmers plant more sugar cane so that we get more than double bonus next year,’’ Barasa said.
The President said on January 1 that results from robust reforms in Mumia are aimed at revamping the once-thriving sugar sector.
Ruto pointed out that Mumias Sugar Company has been placed under new management to ensure farmers and workers are producing more.
“The leasing
programme is going to give us the resources to pay our hard-working farmers a
bonus for their supply of cane to Mumias factory,” he said.
