Five people escape death in Garissa road accident

The five sustained injuries after the two motor vehicles they were travelling in got involved in a head-on collision

Five people have sustained injuries in an accident along the Thika-Garissa Highway in Machakos county.

The five sustained injuries after the two motor vehicles they were travelling in got involved in a head-on collision at Mathauta Bridge in the Kanyonyo area, Yatta subcounty.

The accident happened at around 9.00 pm on Sunday.

Police said the injured persons were all occupants of the said motor vehicles.

One of the motor vehicles had three occupants while the other had two people aboard.

The matter was reported to Matuu police station as a non–fatal accident incident report shortly after it occurred.

Traffic officers from Matuu police station rushed to the scene, processed and cleared it thereby restoring normalcy on the road.

The victims of the accident were rushed to Matuu Level 4 Hospital for medication.

The wreckage was towed to Matuu police station pending inspection and other necessary actions.

Police have launched investigations into the incident.

The incident happened a day after a minor died in a tragic accident in Mlolongo, Machakos county.

The 3–year–old boy died on the spot after he was crashed by a lorry during the accident.

The incident occurred late Friday evening.

It was reported to the Athi River police station as a fatal traffic road accident incident report shortly after it happened.

A senior traffic cop confirmed the incident.

“The boy died on the spot after he was hit by the said motor vehicle,” the cop said.

He, however, requested anonymity since he is not authorised to speak to the press.

Two other people including an expectant woman sustained injuries when the truck ferrying construction bricks knocked them down.

Elsewhere within Machakos, two people died in a grisly road accident along the Machakos-Kitui road in Kaseve on January 17.

Machakos County police commander Patrick Lobolia said the duo included the driver of a Probox motor vehicle and his passenger.

Lobolia said 14 others, passengers of a 14-seater passenger matatu, sustained injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 hospital for medication.

The matter was reported to Machakos police station as a fatal traffic accident incident report.

"Two people died on the spot after two motor vehicles, a probox and 14-seater-passenger matatu got involved in a head-on collision along the Machakos-Kitui road at Kaseve area within Machakos subcounty," Lobolia said.

Lobolia said the matatu was headed to Machakos town while the Probox was moving towards the Kitui general direction when the accident occurred.

"Two people died on the spot while 14 others sustained slight injuries after the vehicles got involved in a head-on collision," Lobolia said.

He said the Probox reportedly lost control and swerved to the right, moving to the matatu's lane leading to the incident.

Traffic officers from Machakos police station responded to the scene, cleared it and removed wreckage and bodies.

The bodies were removed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem and identification.

Lobolia said the wreckage was moved to Machakos police station awaiting inspection and necessary action.

The injured were rushed to the same hospital for medical attention.
