The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), in partnership with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), has announced 50 scholarship opportunities for the March 2025 intake.

The scholarships are aimed at supporting Turkana County residents and refugees in Kakuma and Kolobeyei Camps, who are interested in pursuing a Certificate course in Community Health Nursing.

In a statement on Tuesday, KMTC CEO Dr Kelly Oluoch said the full scholarships will be awarded based on merit, even as he thanked UNHCR for their continued support.

“These scholarships will play a key role in building healthcare capacity in marginalised communities,” Oluoch said.

In 2024, the College received a similar scholarship programme, which attracted around 6,000 applicants.

As part of the collaboration, UNHCR is funding the construction of a library and a tuition block at KMTC Lodwar Campus.

“We are also working on expanding this partnership to fund additional infrastructure development,” Oluoch added.

On January 20, 2025, a high-level team from UNHCR, Novo Nordisk Foundation, the Royal Danish Embassy, and Grundfos Foundation visited the Lodwar Campus.

The delegation inspected ongoing projects, met with beneficiaries and discussed plans to help sponsored students' progress from certificate to diploma programs.

This initiative comes as KMTC prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary since its founding in 1927.

The College continues to seek partnerships to support needy students and strengthen healthcare training across Kenya and beyond.

Those interested in the training are required to have a KCSE mean grade C- or equivalent qualifications, C- in English or Kiswahili, C- in Biology and D+ in any one subject of Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry.

The programme will run for two years.

One must be from the region, and have a letter of introduction from the area chief or a manager a UNHCR official in the Kakuma/Kalobeyei refugee camps.

Applicants are also required to submit a brief essay not more than 200 words, stating why they wish to take the course under the scholarship.

The applications should be made to the CEO, KMTC through the KMTC application portal on or before February 14, 2025.

Oluoch stated that for application from Kakuma and Kolobeyei refugee camps – when filling the biodata under nationality capture your country of origin and under county, subcounty and constituency choose the opinion foreign.
