A suspect has surrendered to authorities after he allegedly stabbed and killed a 35-year-old church elder on Saturday in Homa Bay.
The incident happened during a church service at Ramoya village, Samba Sublocation in Suba South constituency in Homa Bay County.
Police and other officials linked the attack to a suspected love triangle saga.
Police and witnesses said the deceased, a church elder, was stabbed with a knife at the altar before the congregation.
The assistant who is a fellow pastor at the church had allegedly hidden the knife in a bag he had carried to the pulpit, police said.
Witnesses told police the deceased was stabbed by his fellow elder a few minutes after delivering church preaching and reports to the worshipers before the main sermon that was to be presided over by another church pastor.
Suba South Sub County Police commander Caxton Ndunda said the deceased had concluded his session well and handed over to a fellow elder to take over before the pastor’s session which would come later.
It was then the suspect walked to the alter and rearranged some seats.
He had come with his personal bag which contained a Bible and other church materials.
He then removed a knife and stabbed him left side of the chest, where he collapsed on the spot.
Ndunda said the assailant accused the deceased of allegedly being in a sexual relationship with his wife who is also a church member.
He added the assailant had tried to solve the matter in vain. Witnesses said the assailant ran away and surrendered to the area Assistant Chief as a mob bayed for his blood.
The victim was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed while undergoing treatment.
The assistant chief later called police who picked up the suspect at the Magunga Police Station.
The body was moved to St Camillus Hospital Mortuary in Sori Town, Migori County pending autopsy and other procedures.
