Police are holding five suspects alleged to have scammed two foreign nationals Sh15 million (USD120,000).

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement on Tuesday said the two were arrested at different hideouts within the country.

This is after two nationals, a Swiss and a Romanian alleged to have lost their money to the suspects.

According to DCI, the victims filed a complaint about the incident at Wilson Airport Police Station on January 29, 2025.

The victims alleged to have been approached by a contact person who informed them that the prime suspect in the incident was in the business of selling 550kg of gold.

"The gold was purportedly stored at a godown awaiting clearance and was to be transported on January 20, 2025, once the payment of Sh15 million (USD120,000) was made," the DCI said.

The complainants allegedly made the full payment, only to be taken in circles thereafter.

Police launched investigations into the incident, where a number of crucial evidence was collected in a raid on offices owned by one of the suspects.

The DCI claims during another raid, two Glock Pistols, 96 rounds of 9mm ammunition, a pair of handcuffs, laptops and six expired mineral licences were confiscated.

Also recovered was a motor vehicle among other assorted documents.

The DCI alleged a different raid in Nairobi led to the recovery of more exhibits including three 9mm tracer bullets, 14 smoke grenades, a bulletproof vest and assorted seals and stamps.

"The Firearms Licensing Board has since confirmed that the said suspect is not a licensed firearm holder," DCI said.

Two of the suspects have since been arraigned and the investigators granted custodial orders to complete investigations, with the remaining suspects are scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, DCI said.
