Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has faulted President William Ruto for saying that the problem with Kenya is that leaders never stop campaigning.
In a statement responding to the remarks, Sifuna said that while Ruto served as Deputy President, he always reached out to the people.
He said this went on from the time they were first elected into office in 2013 and it continued into their second term.
The Senator said that the President seems to have started the same given his recent engagement and therefore should not blame anyone over early campaigns.
“President William Ruto campaigned 9 out of the 10 years he was Uhuru’s deputy. He has already embarked on campaigns for 2027. He can't speak on early campaigns,” Sifuna said on X.
President Ruto who was speaking to elected and grassroots leaders in Mandera County on Tuesday night said that the problem with Kenya is the unending campaigns.
The President and his deputy Kithure Kindiki are in Northeastern region for a three-day development tour.
In his remarks, Ruto said people should get back to leading instead of having their lives revolve around elections.
He insisted that this is what separates leaders and politicians.
“The problem is not the citizens of Kenya but the leadership. Instead of leading, they are constantly seeking votes. How can you campaign forever? Everything you do revolves around elections. There is a clear difference between leadership and politics,” Ruto said.
During his address, Ruto said that he is ready to provide leadership to the people of Kenya and that is exactly what he will do. He also reminded his competitors that there will be no elections in the next two years at least and anyone who wants to politic should wait for 2027.
