The Kenya Kwanza government is accelerating the completion of major development projects in Luo Nyanza ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The 62nd Mashujaa Day will be held in Homa Bay County on October 20, with the government working to ensure key projects are completed before the national event.

Counties hosting national celebrations benefit from infrastructural projects including the upgrade of key link roads as part of the government’s move to ensure equity.

Among the projects nearing completion is the Homa Bay Affordable Housing Project, a transformative initiative aimed at providing quality and affordable homes for residents.

Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who chairs the powerful National Celebrations Steering Committee, has been highlighting these projects.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Omollo confirmed that some of the projects will be ready for unveiling by President William Ruto during the celebrations.

In 2023, President Ruto launched the 110-unit Homa Bay Affordable Housing Project, a key part of the government’s plan to improve housing across the country.

“Now nearing completion, the first phase is set to be ready for occupancy by March,” PS Omollo said.

He emphasised that the project has stimulated local economic growth, creating hundreds of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers while injecting new energy into regional development.

“By prioritising affordable housing, this initiative aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), empowering grassroots communities and driving economic progress from the bottom up,” he added.

Another key project nearing completion is the Kabunde Airstrip expansion in Homa Bay County.

This government-led initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic development.

According to PS Omollo, the project is expected to be completed ahead of the Mashujaa Day celebrations in October.

The upgrades include extending the runway by 100 meters on both ends and constructing 45-meter turning loops on each side to improve aircraft maneuverability.

It also includes completely replacing the existing tarmac with a modern and durable surface that meets international standards.

“For the local community, this project promises job creation during and after construction, as well as long-term economic benefits through improved mobility and access to services,” Omollo noted.

On a national scale, the upgraded airstrip will strengthen Kenya’s aviation network, supporting the country’s vision of becoming a regional hub for trade and tourism.

Another key infrastructure project nearing completion is the Mbita Ring Road, which President Ruto launched on August 29, 2024.

The 19.3-kilometer road is being constructed in three phases with sections 2 and 3 nearing completion.

Section 1, which spans 8 kilometres, is still under construction.

Once fully completed, the road will enhance connectivity, ease transportation, and unlock new opportunities for trade and tourism in the region.

“Most importantly, it will revitalize the fishing industry, which is the backbone of the local economy. Fishermen will have better access to markets, reducing post-harvest losses and increasing their earnings,” Omollo said.

These infrastructure projects underscore the government's commitment to economic transformation and regional development, ensuring Homa Bay is ready to host a historic Mashujaa Day celebration.
