National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse board chairman Stephen Mairori has said 53 per cent of Kenyans have used different types of drugs in their lifetime.
This is according to a report compiled by the Authority.
Mairori was speaking on Thursday during the marking of the National Prevention Week summit at All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi.
Themed 'My Community, My Prevention Pillar' the event was marked to create awareness of drug abuse among different demographics in society.
The report indicates that alcohol consumption is on the high, mostly abused by employed people.
The survey conducted among university students showed that female students were the highest drug abusers, as compared to previous reports where male students were victims.
Noting this, Mairori urged county governments to assist in the campaigns against drug abuse aimed at sensitizing society.
He further urged county governments to collaborate with different organisations and stakeholders to help curb the increased drug and substance abuse.
Additionally, Mairori called upon the government to consider the placement of Nacada from the trade industry to another department.
This is justified by its main mandate which is to prevent drug abuse and not to generate income through the drug abuse.
