The Interior Ministry has called for calm among Kenyans as
it seeks to unearth the details of the Saturday attack at the Todonyang border,
Turkana County that left several fishermen dead.
Interior PS Raymond Omollo on Sunday acknowledged the ministry was aware of the attack, noting but advised against speculation and sensationalisation of the issue.
This is reports that at least 20 fishermen were killed in an attack by gunmen believed to be from Ethiopia at the Todonyang border, Turkana County.
The incident happened on Saturday evening in Lopeimukay and Lotiira area, police said.
Omollo however said a team was already on the ground to ascertain the details of the attack and issue a statement with the true position on the matter.
“We will be able to share with the country the exact details of that and what I will do for now as the PS is to urge caution so that then we don’t sensationalise,” Omollo said.
“Matters security is a very serious thing that we cannot sensationalise for whatever reason and the country will be made aware in due course on what exactly happened and the extent of causalities,” the PS said.
Omollo said since the attack happened on the border on the side of the Ethiopia territory, it means there is a lot of back and forth that the Kenyan security teams are doing on the ground in terms of communication.
He said the regional commissioner, the county commissioner, and the county intelligence team are on the ground trying to look at the matter.
The PS said these are basically artificial boundaries because the communities that live on either side share a lot in common, adding that from time to time there is always conflict.
“I want to give assurance to the country that there is no reason to panic or to sensationalise this. I am also in communication with the leadership from Turkana County and we are working together to deal with any challenge that may have arisen out of what happened last night,” Omollo said.
He added: “For now I want to rest at that, ignore the numbers that are being peddled around because that is not the correct position and we will be able to share as soon as we reaffirm and confirm everything.”
