Dozens of personnel from the Kenya Wildlife Service and Kenya Forest Service joined in efforts to contain the spread of a fire at the Aberdare and Mt Kenya Forests.

Officials said the fire broke out separately and was spreading fast.

KWS Senior Assistant Director in the Mountain Conservation Area, Lucy Mwati, said separate teams are fighting an active fire in the Embaringo section of Aberdare Forest.

She said the fire has been active for the past week. Whenever it was contained, it would break out elsewhere.

“We have been experiencing fires at the Aberdares since last week. Every time we contain one, another breaks out in a different area due to the hot weather.”

“The fire within the Embaringo section in the northern part of the forest remains active, and efforts to suppress it are ongoing," she said.

In Mt Kenya Forest, officials said a team of conservationists was still battling a fire in the Burguret area. The fire started in one section on Monday but has spread to other areas.

So far, the fire has been successfully extinguished in one section, while efforts to contain the other are ongoing. KWS officials promised to issue a detailed statement on the incidents that have become common in most forests.

Similar fires have been reported in conservancies in central Kenya in recent weeks, raising concerns about the impact of prolonged dry weather on the region's forests.

For instance, officials have been fighting to contain fires in parts of Isiolo forests. The weathermen have blamed hot conditions for the trend amid fears of more destruction in the coming days.
