Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says that his impeachment from office would not stop him from vying for office or engaging in political activities.

According to Gachagua, this is an issue that does not worry him at all.

He cited the Constitution of Kenya, saying that it allows people to seek elective positions for as long as they have not exhausted all channels available for appeal.

The former DP said the case has just started and is at the High Court, which means that he still has time to engage the people before the next general elections because he has influence.

“I have a case in court, has it stopped you from coming to interview me? The case will not stop anything. I am not the only leader in Kenya but I have influence, with or without the case.

“The Constitution of Kenya is very clear, nobody will stop you from vying because you have an ongoing case in court. What the law says is that the right to vie for elective office is absolute as long as you have not exhausted the mechanisms available to seek remedy. We are only in the high court,” Gachagua said in an interview.

The former DP said if anything, the impeachment has only made him more popular than he was while he served in government.

He went on to say that he will do all that needs to be done to have his side of the political divide succeed.

“It has not diminished my capacity to mobilise the people. In fact this impeachment has made me more popular than I was and I thank Ruto for chasing me away. I will do what I need to do to make sure we succeed.”

Gachagua added that the reason leaders from the current administration continue attacking him, even after chasing him out of government is because they know he is influential and has a loyal following.

“If this impeachment affected me, how come they talk about Rigathi Gachagua every day? They know I have some influence in this country and many people look upon me for leadership and I will guide those who listen to me properly in the right direction.

“Don’t worry about the case, it will stop nothing and this journey will not stop. We know what we want and where we are headed. I would be very worried if the court restricted me to only interacting with my family but I continue my political engagements,” he said.

According to the Constitution of Kenya, once impeached, a leader remains not fit to hold public office.

However, an impeachment can be challenged in the Court.
