People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has disclosed that she declined an offer to join former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Cabinet.
According to Karua, the offer came after he supported Uhuru’s re-election bid, but because of her principles and those of her party, she did not take up the offer.
Karua said that she has been out of office for about 12 years and she does not plan to join any government she does not believe in.
She insisted that her party will continue to fight for Kenyans until the day they come to power.
“Narc Kenya is principled, and we have not joined governments we don’t believe in. I was offered to be a Cabinet Secretary in Uhuru’s government; I declined, although I had supported him, and I have been out of government for 12 years, and Narc Kenya has not been in government, and we patiently wait for the day the People's Liberation Party will get its day,” Karua said.
The Iron Lady spoke ahead of the launch of her rebranded party, the People’s Liberation Party, which will now identify with colour purple, a move away from the green for its dropped name, Narc Kenya.
In the interview on Citizen TV, Karua said that she cannot rule out coalitions because currently one cannot win elections in Kenya without working with other people.
She defended her decision to work with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying that just like former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, he (Gachagua) is also a brother.
Karua said she is working together with Gachagua to save the country from pain.
She said that this makes her and the former deputy president allies.
“Riggy G (Rigathi Gachagua) is a Kenyan; he is my brother, just like Ruto is my brother and just like Raila is my brother, and we have parted politically," Karua said.
“At this moment we are standing in the same place with Riggy G and other leaders, determined to relieve Kenyans of the pain that is on their backs, and so to that extent, we are allies."
