Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni has revealed that the ‘strange’ Kisii disease is linked to contaminated water.

In an update on Tuesday, Muthoni said tests carried out confirmed the presence of faecal matter in a community well.

“Tests confirmed the presence of faecal matter in a community well which has contaminated the water, making it the likely source of the outbreak. Samples from the affected also show the presence of the matter,” she said.

The PS urged the community to abstain from using the said source of water and rather get an alternative source.

She added that there are samples still in the laboratory and an ongoing investigation.

“However, preliminary investigations already are telling us that this water is not good for human consumption. I want to urge every member of this community to please observe a high level of hygiene,” she said.

The illness has affected over 200 residents across three villages, including Nyabigege, Nyamarondo, and Nyarigiro.

The sick have experienced symptoms including high fever, persistent diarrhea with bloody stools, dizziness and intense headaches.

Other symptoms include joint pain, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

Those infected have been hospitalised in Tabaka Mission Hospital, Nyatike Level Two Hospital, Prina Hospital and Royal Hospital in Rongo.

The sudden onset and rapid spread of the illness have heightened concerns among locals, many of whom are unsure of what is happening or how to protect themselves.

On Monday, the PS had confirmed that health officials were on the ground, actively collecting samples from those affected.

She assured the public that the Ministry of Health is working closely with the Kisii County government to analyse the samples and determine the appropriate medical response.

She assured residents that all necessary measures were being taken to contain the disease and safeguard public health.
