"The heavy rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours and spread to part of northwestern Kenya on March 10, 2025. It is projected to reduce in intensity from March 11, 2025," Gikungu said.

He said the counties to be affected are Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Baringo, Nakuru and Trans-Nzoia.

"Residents in all the mentioned areas are advised to be on the lookout for potential floods, flash floods and poor visibility. People are advised not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightning strikes," the weatherman advised.

He said further updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes to the forecast.

The advisory comes as the country awaits the start of the long rains season, which traditionally run from March all through May.

The heaviest rainfall tyically occurs during April across most parts of the country around the Easter holiday.

Kenya Met said the March to May period is the major rainfall season over most parts of Kenya and much of equatorial Eastern Africa.

The highest seasonal rainfall amounts of greater than 300mm are normally received over the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Central and South Rift Valley, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County) and the Coastal Strip.
