Migori Senator Eddy Oketch has said the deal between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will transform the country's governance.
Speaking in an interview with Citizen TV on Monday, Oketch said the deal will lead to inclusivity and rid governance of tribalism.
"I think the deal between the president and Raila Odinga is one of the most important things that has happened to us as a country. We have talked particularly about inclusivity. It is true," he said.
Oketch noted that during elections, coalitions have always been organised along tribal lines.
He added that this means that most appointed government officials, including cabinet secretaries and principal secretaries, end up coming from the few tribes that have won the election
Ruto and Raila signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday, aimed at addressing the country’s social, economic and political challenges in 2025.
The political pact will see the two parties work together.
The issues contained in the MoU include the full implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report that proposed key reforms within the country, inclusivity for all minority groups and strengthening devolution to improve services on a local level.
The MoU also touched on the need to respect Kenyans' rights to protest and for the national police service to update their methods of handling demonstrators who are exercising their Constitutional rights.
The pact also addressed the national debt, with both parties agreeing that a national audit must be carried out to determine the country's status.
Ruto and Raila agreed to fight corruption by enhancing the capacity of institutions that enforce accountability, such as the Auditor General and the Controller of Budget.
They also agreed to prevent wastage of government resources to promote efficiency, and to protect and promote the sovereignty of the Constitution to protect human rights, maintain order and prevent abuse of power.
