The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has arrested three individuals following a major crackdown on shisha use, in Nairobi.
Nacada on Thursday night conducted two raids in joints within the city, confiscating at least 52 shisha bongs, in the process.
The raids were led by Nacada’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance, James Koskey.
He emphasised the authority’s commitment to eradicate shisha use in the country.
“Shisha is not only illegal but also poses significant health risks to users, including addiction and respiratory diseases. We will continue to conduct such operations to ensure compliance with the law and protect public health,” he said.
In the first raid, 10 shisha bongs were confiscated and one suspect was arrested.
In the second raid, Nacada seized 42 shisha bongs, 56 assorted shisha flavours, with two suspects getting arrested.
The raid is part of Nacada’s ongoing efforts to enforce the 2017 ban on shisha.
The ban prohibits its manufacture, importation, sale, and use in Kenya due to its severe health risks.
Thursday’s crackdown follows a series of similar operations in Nairobi, earlier this month.
Nacada raided another popular club, confiscating some 30 shisha bongs and arresting four individuals.
In another operation, 15 bongs and assorted flavours were seized, with three suspects taken into custody.
These efforts are part of a broader campaign to curb the resurgence of shisha use, particularly among young people, who are often unaware of its dangers.
Nacada has urged the public to report any establishments or individuals violating the shisha ban through its toll-free helpline, 1192.
“We cannot win this fight alone. We need the support of the public to identify and report those breaking the law,” Koskey added.
The suspects arrested will be arraigned in court.
They will face charges related to the possession and distribution of shisha.
