Airtel Money users will experience a 12-hour service disruption on May 3 and May 4, 2025, as the company conducts the final phase of a major system upgrade.

In a statement on Tuesday, Airtel Kenya said the upgrade is aimed at improving customer experience and rolling out new, innovative services.

“This last phase is scheduled for 11 pm on Saturday, May 3, to 11 am on Sunday, May 4. During this time, all Airtel Money services will be unavailable,” Airtel said.

This will include sending and receiving money, bank transfers, bill payments and agent withdrawals.

The upgrade marks the second and final phase, following a notice on April 6, 2025.

Airtel says the move is part of its commitment to delivering more advanced and customer-friendly digital financial solutions.

“We understand that the downtime may cause temporary inconvenience, and we sincerely apologise for the disruption,” the company said.

To cushion customers from the inconvenience, Airtel has announced a 100 per cent cashback (Rudishiwa) offer on transaction fees in the form of airtime.

This will apply to Bank to Airtel Money transactions, Paybill payments, and Agent Withdrawals made once services resume and will be valid until midnight on May 4, 2025.

The upgrade reflects a broader trend among mobile money providers seeking to modernise infrastructure to support faster, safer, and more versatile services for their growing user base.

Airtel has thanked customers for their continued support, promising a smoother and more robust Airtel Money experience after the upgrade.

“At Airtel Money, we are committed to continuous innovation and improvement to better serve your evolving needs,” the service provider said.

On April 4, Airtel announced that it would be conducting a system upgrade, scheduled to take place in two phases.

The first phase was done on April 6, 2025, from midnight to 10am.
