ODM Nyanza aspirants convention meeting in Kisumu. Faith Matete ODM leader Oburu Oginga has sounded the alarm over the growing influence of money in Kenyan politics, warning that voters are increasingly electing leaders based on wealth rather than merit.
Speaking during a meeting with ODM aspirants from the Nyanza region in Kisumu, Oburu urged politicians to seek leadership as a platform for service and not personal enrichment.
“It is money that is spoiling the politics of this country. It is money that is making people elect those who do not deserve leadership,” he said.
The Siaya Senator, who said he is serving his seventh term in Parliament and previously served as an elected councillor in Kisumu, noted that politics is not a guaranteed route to riches.
“If you want to get into politics to make money, I can assure you, you will regret it. If you get a chance to serve, just serve your people,” he said.
Oburu challenged aspiring leaders to win public support through trust, development and service delivery instead of relying on handouts and financial influence.
He also recalled how ODM had previously resisted the culture of monetising politics, saying the party built its strength through grassroots support and loyalty from members.
The veteran politician further called for unity within the Orange party, cautioning that internal competition should not weaken ODM ahead of future elections.
“Our party is as strong as you are united. Even those who did not win positions in the recent ODM elections should not worry because members, not officials, will decide during nominations,” he said.
Oburu urged aspirants to focus on grassroots mobilisation and recruitment of party members instead of depending on party officials for political survival.
“If you want more supporters, look for them in the membership, not in the office,” he added.
He said the enthusiasm among ODM aspirants reflected growing commitment to public service and the continued expansion of the party at the grassroots.
