  • Event  transformed the sprawling grounds into an enchanting open-air cinema

Film Sunset held their latest outdoor movie screening at Jamhuri Grounds last Saturday, and it was nothing short of amazing.

The event, which drew mostly couples as it was Valentine’s weekend, transformed the sprawling grounds into an enchanting open-air cinema.

The set-up, comprising bales of hay for chairs, beanbags and blankets, created a cozy atmosphere that perfectly matched the event’s ‘Nairobae’ theme, an ode to the city’s beauty, nightlife and unique culture.

We arrived at the venue at around midday, just when other attendees began streaming in. The excitement in the atmosphere was palpable as folks mingled and wandered between food stalls and art displays.

Groups of friends challenged each other at Giant Jenga and Tic-Tac-Toe, while others chose to kick back and enjoy the live band performances.

The artistically inclined were not left behind as there were plenty of engaging and fun art activities. Armed with vibrant markers and uniquely designed templates, participants channelled their inner creativity, colouring away while lounging on picnic blankets.

After a couple of strolls under the scorching heat, my friends and I decided to grab some ice cream from the London Ice cream truck parked strategically in one corner. The refreshing scoops of vanilla and strawberry were just what we needed to cool down before settling in for the main event.

As dusk approached, the atmosphere shifted seamlessly from a casual afternoon hangout to a magical movie experience. String lights flickered to life, casting a warm glow over the grounds, setting the perfect mood for the film screening. Couples huddled together under the blankets, sharing popcorn and quiet laughter, while groups of friends sprawled across picnic mats, chatting excitedly, eager for the first movie to start.

The first showing was the classic Titanic movie, which perfectly aligned with the weekend’s theme of love. The gripping love story of Rose and Jack coupled with the breathtaking cinematography left many, particularly those watching the film for the first time, struggling to fight back tears.

After a brief intermission, which allowed attendees to grab a quick snack and refresh, the organisers wisely balanced the evening’s emotions by following Titanic with a lighthearted comedy chick flick, likely anticipating the need for a mood lift after such an emotional ride.

White Chicks, starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans, was the last film of the night, and judging by the bursts of laughter every few scenes, the crowd was absolutely loving it.

The movie ended a few minutes past 11.30, and the collective sigh of satisfaction was a clear indication of what a success the event had been.

As we made our way to the exit, I couldn't help but notice those who remained behind, pulling their friends or significant other to capture photos under the fairy lights, freezing moments they’d want to remember

Film Sunset had once again delivered an unforgettable experience, and I honestly can’t wait for the next one.
